We must not do anything out of a spirit of discord or vanity, and humility must lead us to consider others as superior to ourselves. Everyone must follow not only their own interest, but also that of others. To serve, no longer as a slave held to his work, but as a free person who generously offers his skills and strengths, who is committed to a group, to a part - if not all - of those who need his help, without exceptions and without prejudice.
It is also an appeal for us today to keep our minds and hearts open so as to recognize and think about the needs of others, to be active when we build authentically human relationships, to grow our talents for the common good, and to start again despite our failures. It is the invitation to place ourselves in the last place in order to summon everyone towards a possible future: universal brotherhood.
Chiara Lubich suggested how to serve in concrete life: choosing the last place in the countless opportunities that present themselves to us every day. Have we been entrusted with a responsibility of a certain importance? We must not feel that we are "someone", let us not leave room for arrogance and pride. Let's remember that the most important thing is to love others. Let us take the opportunity of the new situation to serve others better, without forgetting to think about what seem to be small things: personal relationships, humble everyday duties, help for parents, peace and harmony in the family, the education of children... It is that the secret of our existence is to love, and love preferentially the least. By doing so, our life will be a permanent construction of universal brotherhood.
The protection of our common home - the cosmos -, something so current, is a service to the common good that we can share with many people in the world, and for many years it has been a strong idea for the common testimony of men, in order to discover the value of everything and make ourselves bearers of peace in the human family.
